Helpful Tips From Your Fellow Players and Residents

  • When using an ATM never accept the conversion rate. ONLY use the ATM inside a bank branch.

  • When arriving at the Cabo airport, grab luggage and don’t stop at any counters along the way, keep walking through.

  • Uber cannot pick up at the doors of the La Paz airport; you have to walk off property to meet your ride. But you can be dropped off.

  • Don’t be afraid to try the roadside vendors, that is some of the best food you will experience.

  • Download a translator onto your phone.

  • If you require data and Wi-Fi, that can be purchased in La Paz at either an OXXO or Telcel (check your current carrier's rate of out of country charges).

  • Spanish words to help with your travel; Thank you - gracias, Please - por-favor, Excuse me - disculpe,

  • Renting a car? Make sure to check insurance prices in addition to rental rates!!!.

  • Flights Options - Check into La Paz flights through Guadalajara vs direct flights to Cabo - while counterintuitive to frequent US travelers, it’s frequently faster when you consider shuttle time and almost always less expensive. Shop for legs individually.

  • Flying into Cabo Airport? - If a private car (not Uber) is picking you up at the airport, go up the escalator after customs and meet them at Arrivals level (outside doors labelled 3 or 4).

  • If you rent a car, you’ll need some cash for the toll road (which is faster). Take a ticket from the machine at the first booth, pay on exit.

  • Eco Baja Tours will take you from Cabo Airport to central La Paz for about $50. You can book it online and the site is in Spanish and English.

  • While US dollars are often accepted in Cabo, pesos are the primary currency in La Paz. Some US banks allow customers to order pesos at their local branch.

  • While in Mexico, consider using WhatsApp (as we all know that is the primary means of communication).

  • Eric Zhevel at Seahorse Car Rental is awesome to deal with and quick to respond, https://www.seahorsecarrental.com/
(Several have rented from him, and he was fantastic to deal with!)

  • Doctors are available at almost all Farmacias for a small fee. Farmacia Similares and Walmart both have doctors, as well as at the purple hospital (Fidepaz) for more severe medical conditions.

  • Sunscreen and sun protection is a must.

  • Always carry toilet paper or Kleenex just in case the bathroom you’re using does not have it

 MOST IMPORTANT TIP

Please show kindness and respect to the Mexican people, this will be returned to you 10-fold! (Thank You, Bruce)
